THE REV Valerie Allen, B. Mus., M. Div, minister at Arbroath Old and Abbey Church for the last 16 years, will preach her final sermon on Sunday, February 10.

The first woman minister in the town will leave her post on March 31 and plans to move to the Central Belt to undertake what she expressed as a “voyage of discovery”.

She will be seeking funding for the next project in her life, looking at women’s spirituality from a theological aspect. Her move from Arbroath will permit her greater freedom for research.

Miss Allen was inducted to the charge on Thursday, August 22, 1996, at a service conducted by the Rev. Helen Percy, M. Theol., and the Rev. Betsy Irvine, a friend from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, read the lesson.

The induction was conducted by the Rev. Brian Ramsay, BD, DPS, Moderator of the Presbytery of Angus and the Rev. R.J. Ramsay, LL.B, NP, BD, clerk to the Presbytery of Angus read the Narrative.

Also present was the Rev. Don Campbell, General Presbyter, the Presbytery of South Louisiana.

This week, the Rev. Allen said: “It really has been a fantastic ministry in Arbroath and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be very sad to leave the town and the area.”
