NHS launches green bin campaign

NHS TAYSIDE launched a new recycling drive today (Monday) as part of Climate Week.

The health authority recently took delivery of 180 recycling bins following a grant of £25,000 from Zero Waste Scotland and will start rolling them out to coincide with Climate Week which runs from today until Sunday.

The new recycling bins will be distributed, along with the message ‘Recycling - let’s get it sorted’ among hospitals and health centres throughout Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross for the public to use.

NHS Tayside chairman and sustainability champion Sandy Watson joined head of environmental management Ernie Patullo at Ninewells Hospital today to launch the scheme.

Mr Watson said: “NHS Tayside is working towards meeting the challenging Scottish Government targets set for the disposal of waste.

“By 2025, 70 per cent of each health board’s waste must be recycled or composted with only 5 per cent going to landfill.

“Therefore, we are launching this initiative today, as part of a wider campaign by NHS Tayside to ensure we are being an environmentally and socially responsible organisation.

“We are encouraging people to be as green as possible and are promoting a culture of good habits when it comes to recycling.

“It also means that the money saved by recycling waste instead of sending it to landfill will be directly reinvested in providing frontline patient care, ensuring patients across Tayside continue to receive the best possible care and treatment.”

Mr Patullo added: “We are making it easier for people to recycle when they are out and about and this will play a key role in reducing NHS Tayside’s carbon footprint.”

Director of Zero Waste Scotland Iain Gulland said: “We must stop thinking of used materials, like empty bottles and drinks cans, as waste. There’s real value in the goods we throw away, and the small effort it takes to separate waste for recycling can contribute to economic growth for Scotland.

“These new recycling bins will make it easier for people to recycle on the go at hospitals in Tayside and we would encourage all visitors to make use of them when possible.”
