Marine eyes up Games success
AN ARBROATH based Royal Marine is preparing for Commonwealth Games glory after securing another two year sports draft in judo.
Chris Sherrington, from 45 Commando will now train full-time for another two years in a bid to secure a medal at Glasgow 2014.
Chris has already enjoyed a successful year after making the British judo team to compete in the London Olympic Games, where he was unlucky not to get on the podium.
However he was unsure whether the military would allow him to continue his sports draft for another two years.
But he is delighted to learn his full-time training will carry on as he looks towards success in two years time.
Chris said: “We didn’t know if I could continue with the full-time training and I might have had to return to 45 Commando.
“But after the success of the Olympics they thought I did enough to be able to stay in full-time training for the Commonwealth Games.
“I will definitely be looking for a medal in Glasgow but judo is such an unpredictable sport, you never know what will happen.”
Despite being born in Lancashire, Chris will represent Scotland in the Commonwealth Games as he aims to taste success.
He so nearly took a medal at the London Olympics earlier this year and he knows a good performance in Glasgow could help him to a second Olympic appearance in Rio in 2016.
He added: “London was just a fantastic experience and it really was competing at the highest level of judo.
“I fought quite well and was pipped to the post for a medal after the three-times world champion beat me.
“Hopefully if I can remain in the top 22 I can give myslef a good chance of staying full time for Rio.
“I have been doing this for eight years now, which is incredible and hopefully I can keep on form for Rio and stay injury free becuase that is when I will hit my peak age.”
Chris (29) still pops into RM Condor for time to time to see his 45 Commando colleagues.
But on Tuesday he jetted off to Brazil to compete with the British judo team at a tournament in the country before travelling to Samoa, a place which holds happy memories for him.
He explained: “Going to Brazil should be good experience for us as we will be going in against some of the top teams.
“We won’t have our strongest team there but it will be good to see what we can do.
“Then in two weeks time I go to Samoa, where I gained my place in the Olympic team last year.
“I also won the gold medal at that event and would love to do the same again.”
