Latest news from Arbroath Legion

THE PUBLIC relations officer of the Arbroath branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, Dougie Reid, continues to make up albums on the history of the branch and has recently completed a story on the Maggie Smith, a fishing boat blown up by a German mine near the Bell Rock at the end of the First World War.

He started from the beginning of the First World War (although the branch was not inaugurated until 1935) and is currently working his way through 1988.

In the albums are stories of many Arbroath men and women who joined the armed forces on leaving school or had been serving for a number of years; sports stories, etc, all of which are available to read inside the Legion clubrooms.

The new branch secretary, Keith Baldry, says that recruitment is going well with 38 new members to date, making the total membership 1,037. This is made up of 541 full/OAP members, 405 associate/OAP associate members, 85 family members and six honorary members.

Keith also reports the bingo continues to be popular with approximately 100 to 120 people attending each Sunday. The snowball was won just before the New Year, which went to a regular patron.

Forthcoming events are Bully Beef Night on March 8, so watch out for tickets; an Air Cadet Race Night on March 9, Dundee Strathspey Reel Society on March 23, Heartbeat on April 13, and Caravan on May 18.
