Jacob and Lucy are top names

THE MOST popular names for babies whose births were registered in Arbroath in 2012 have been revealed.

Arbroath Registry Office, which serves both Arbroath and Carnoustie, say Jacob was the most popular boys’ name.

While Lucy was the top name for girls being registered in the area.

The office also revealed parents were sticking to more traditional vintage style names, although spelling is becoming more unconventional.

Top names in the local area buck the wider local trend. In Angus, Jack and Sophie were the most popular.

This coincides with the Scotland wide statistics which also show Jack and Sophie, being the most commonly used baby names.

Mollie, made popular by Mollie King of the girl group The Saturdays, has also risen in popularity as has Mya, Scarlet and Darcey

For boys, Frankie enjoyed the biggest rise but Hugo, the name brought to fame by Made in Chelsea star and former ‘I’m a Celebrity’ contestant Hugo Taylor is also on the rise nationwide.

The annual baby names report for the UK, compiled by bounty.com also revealed that there is a growing trend for ‘old man’ names, especially those that are given a contemporary spin by using the nickname for the traditional variation like Alfie, Archie, Bobby, Charlie, Frankie and Freddy.
