ARBROATH was showing off its ethical credentials this week as Scotland celebrated its own recognition as a
Fairtrade state.

On Monday Minister for External Relations and International Development Humza Yousal MSP announced Scotland had been recognised as a Fair Trade Nation, a move welcomed by Arbroath Fairtrade coordinator
Mary Reid.

She said: “It’s great we finally made it. Scotland is only the second nation after Wales to achieve Fair Trade Nation status.

“Arbroath can celebrate because they did their bit and now in 2013 Scotland is a Fair Trade Nation.”

South Angus MSP Graeme Dey commented: “I welcome Scotland’s new title as a Fair Trade Nation and hope people continue to embrace the Fairtrade message, which is delivering a better deal to developing
countries.

“The accolade is a great credit to the country and shows we are punching above our weight to help some of the poorest regions of the
world.

“I know, in my own constituency, the towns of Arbroath and Carnoustie have secured Fairtrade status and that a number of individual organisations are actively involved in Fairtrade. I hope others follow their
lead.”

Arbroath was awarded Fairtrade status in September last year with Carnoustie following shortly after. Montrose has been Fairtrade
since 2009.

Also on Monday Angus politicians Mike Weir MP and Graeme Dey MSP visited the Co-op store in Timmergreens to find out more about Fairtrade products as part of Fairtrade Fortnight which runs until
March 10.

Co-op Food Store Timmergreens’ manager Gordon Keir said: “We’re really proud of our Fairtrade range here in Timmergreens.

“It’s fantastic to think that people can pop into the store for some fruit for the children, some coffee for the office or even a cheeky bottle of wine for the evening and, at the same time, be helping communities thousands of miles away.”

MP for Angus Mike Weir added: “It is crucial that we give producers around the world a fair deal and I applaud The Co-operative for their efforts in this regard.

“I am always happy to support Fairtrade Fortnight and would encourage people to think about how small changes, like making the switch to Fairtrade products, can make a massive difference to others.”
