Home will provide ‘new level of care’

CARE provision for young people in Arbroath could receive a much needed upgrade this year if Angus Council plans are given the go ahead.

Angus Council’s property division recently submitted an application to build a six-bedroomed children’s home and a six-bedroomed children’s home with a two-bedroom annexe at land north of Cairnie Lodge on James Chalmers Street in the Kirkton Industrial Estate.

It is understood the new facility is designed to replace the existing Kinnaird Street Young Persons Unit which provides both long and short-term residential care services to young people with a range of complex needs.

Councillor Glennis Middleton, social work and health committee convener, welcomed the proposals.

She said: “This is a hugely important thing, we must have these facilities. We must be in the position where we can deliver the required level of service and I am very happy we are looking at this new proposal for young people.

“The facility in Kinnaird Street is well past its sell by date and in addition to the fact that the accommodation inside is really not up to standard it is important to have a facility for young people where they can still have ease of access to schools and other services but that they also have a measure of privacy in their new site.

The councillor added: “This project has been a long time coming and I’m delighted that the social work and health department is now looking to make this brief revision.”

If given the green light by Angus Council work is expected to commence in the summer and the build should take around a year to complete.
