AN ENJOYABLE day was had by all at this year’s SOS Day fund-raising event held at Arbroath lifeboat station on Saturday.

Greeted by a sunny winter morning, the lifeboat crew began the day early with veteran crew member Ron Churchill first on the rowing machine in the sponsored row-a-thon relay at 9 a.m.

By the time the challenge had finished nearly eight hours later, a total distance of 105 miles had been covered by the crew!

Aside from the crew challenge, there was also a sprint rowing challenge for members of the public to enter and the winner was Gordon Smith who covered an impressive 636 metres in just two minutes!

In the raffle that took place on the day, the lucky winning ticket was bought by Jenny van Wees.

Both Gordon and Jenny won an opportunity for them and a partner to join the crew for a trip on the all-weather lifeboat, RNLB Inchcape.

Of course the success of the day could not have been possible without the help of many people and the crew said they would like to show their appreciation to everyone involved including RM Condor for the use of the rowing machines; Arbroath Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild for providing and selling refreshments throughout the day; Rab’s Bouncy Castles, Dundee, for the bouncy castle and inflatable sumo wrestling courtesy of Ben Thomson and Gavin Smith, the jet-skiers rescued by the Arbroath crew; and everyone else who gave up their time and effort to make the day a big success.

A big thank you is extended to all who came down to support the event and to everyone who sponsored a crew member in the row-a-thon challenge.

A spokesperson for the crew stated: “Although the final amount raised has not yet been established, a healthy total is anticipated and will contribute to the vital equipment and training provided by the RNLI to allow its volunteer crews yo continue saving lives at sea.”
