Further boost for Abbey weddings

LEAFLETS advertising Arbroath Abbey as the perfect place for couples to tie the knot were launched on Monday.
Last year the Abbey’s custodians Historic Scotland revealed weddings were no longer taking place at the historical landmark saying demand was too low.
But after a campaign fronted by the Arbroath Abbey Action Group, which featured heavily in the Arbroath Herald, Historic Scotland agreed to re-instate Abbey weddings.
And in a bid to promote the Abbey as a venue for couples to make their declarations of love, a new leaflet has been produced which it is hoped will raise the awareness of the Abbey as a wedding location.
Angus Council has already agreed to display the leaflets in local libraries and access offices.
Meanwhile, members of the Arbroath Abbey Action Group are also distributing the leaflets to businesses involved in providing services for weddings across Angus and hope to complete this by the end of the week.
And even though the action group was successful in persuading Historic Scotland to reinstate Abbey weddings, chairman Harry Ritchie says more promotion of the venue needs to be done.
He explained: “The group, among other things, has succeeded in persuading Historic Scotland to reinstate access to the Abbey for the staging of wedding ceremonies after they announced plans to remove this facility.
“However, continuing access will depend upon the level of uptake.
“In other words, it is a case of ‘use it or lose it’.
As well as encouraging local couples to consider a wedding at the Abbey the action group hope they can tap into the growing market of American couples coming to Scotland to marry.
The action group also have sent the leaflet to the Scottish Coalition, a organisation made up of the six largest ex-pat and Scottish Associations in America with a total membership in excess of 200,000 people.
And already they have had a positive response from the coalition’s secretary.
Mr Ritchie added: “She is extremely interested in our group and is requesting viewing of the leaflet prior to distributing it to the six groups within the coalition for inclusion in each groups own circular newsletter to their individual members.
“This has been done as in 2011 there were 144 couples came from the USA and were married in Scotland but none of whom came to Arbroath.
“The action group felt that this was a market worth tapping into.”
