Fund-raisers visit lifeboat station
Arbroath lifeboat station was visited by a group of generous fund-raisers on Saturday morning.
Cynthia Lyon has organised and run, in all weathers, car boot sales at the Abbeygate Centre car park in Arbroath on several Sundays for the past three years. A fantastic total of £3,053 has been raised in that time for Arbroath lifeboat station. This year she has raised £980.
Last year, following an RNLI appeal to raise funds for the purchase of the latest lifejackets for all lifeboat crews throughout the country, Cynthia eagerly responded to a request from Arbroath Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild allowing her donation of £1,351 to be used towards the cost of the new lifejackets.
A further donation of £417.65 given by Dundee Model Boat Club has been passed to Arbroath Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild.
Some members of the club had a display of their model boats at this year’s Sea Fest event in Arbroath and by holding a collection over the course of the weekend they were able to raise this fantastic amount which will go towards running costs of Arbroath lifeboat station.
Lifeboat operations manager for Arbroath, Alex Smith, speaking on behalf of the crew, said: We really appreciate the time, commitment and generosity shown by Cynthia and the guys at Dundee Model Boat Club in their fund-raising efforts.
“The RNLI rely on such efforts and without them we simply could not provide the level of service we do.”
Richard Smith, the RNLI’s public relations manager in Scotland, said: “Cynthia is a shining example of the tremendous community spirit that exists in the Arbroath area to support the RNLI’s lifeboats and volunteer crews. We are indebted to so many fund-raisers like her who generously give up their time and raise money from all sorts of events.
“The Arbroath lifeboat station is at the heart of the charity’s lifesaving service and there the RNLI provides two lifeboats available to launch 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It costs, on average, about £4,100 to run a station like Arbroath every week. This money comes from the public and our aim is to use every penny given to us to save lives at sea safely, effectively and as cost-efficiently as possible.
“Our costs range from the £8 required for a pair of sea-going gloves to £150 for a pager, from £168 for a pair of trousers to £350 for a lifejacket, from £39,000 for a D class inshore lifeboat to £1.5 million for the Shannon, the RNLI’s newest class of lifeboat.
“The charity has saved 140,000 lives since it was founded in 1824 and the RNLI looks forward to continuing this noble act of saving lives at sea, made possible by the generosity of all our supporters.”
