Fairy Box Christmas

THE NATIONAL children’s charity, The Fairy Box, is expanding its Christmas toy appeal to Arbroath.

In a new partnership with local housebuilder, Stewart Milne Homes, the charity aims to widen the accessibility of its Tayside appeal and spread the Christmas spirit to more sick children and their families.

Based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Tayside Children’s Hospital cares for hundreds of children every year from across Dundee, Angus, Perth, Kinross and North Fife. The Fairy Box charity aims to help sick children cope with the experience of medical trauma by providing ‘comforters’ during difficult times in the form of donated toys, books and games, which they then keep as their own and take home.

To help drive donations during the season of goodwill, Stewart Milne Homes will be hosting a specially created ‘Giving Tree’ at its Monarch’s Rise development, off Montrose Road, and encouraging people to add just one more name to the Christmas list.

People can now donate to the appeal by dropping off gifts at the specially converted showhome, which is open from Thursday to Monday. Donations need to be brand new and unwrapped (and either boxed, sealed or bagged) for an individual child from six months to 13 years old.

Rosie Butler, Fairy Box founder and chairman of the board, said: “Christmas is an especially difficult time to be in hospital, both for the children and their families. From first hand experience, we know that getting through bad times is made a much lighter task with the hopes and good wishes of others.

“We currently have five Fairy Boxes at Ninewells, which are in constant demand by the medical and nursing staff on the wards. The children develop a significant bond with their individual comforter and we find it really helps to focus their energy on more positive feelings.

“We are delighted to be working with Stewart Milne Homes to help widen our appeal for Christmas and hope the new ‘Giving Tree’ locations will give people more chances to donate, keeping these special boxes full all year round.”

Sales director of Stewart Milne Homes North Scotland, Mike Cowie, added: “The new partnership with Fairy Box gives us a great opportunity to utilise our showhomes for a truly worthwhile cause. The team has already pledged to donate the first gifts and we really hope we can encourage greater participation in the initiative this year.”
