Dook brings in the cash

THE ANGUS committee of Cancer Research UK has had a splashing start to 2013 as it was revealed the New Year’s Day dook raised over £3,000.

The event, which was the third annual dip took place on January 1 at Arbroath Lifeboat Station and it was the biggest one yet.

And after all sponsor money had been collected, organisers have revealed that the grand total of £3,300 was raised for Cancer Research UK, the biggest total from the event so far.

A formal cheque presentation of the proceeds to the cause will take place next week but members of the fund-raising committee are not slowing down.

They are already focusing on their next fund-raisers, which will be a charity quiz in the Portcullis on March 22 at 7.30 p.m. and an art auction which is set to take place in April.

Chair of the committee Alana Loudon explained: “Gail from the Resin Art Gallery is working on two pieces of art, which she is donating to us to auction off.

“She is still working on them but one will be in the Cancer Research UK colours, which should make a lovely picture.”

More details about the auction will be released soon while other events have also been planned for later in the year.

These include a quiz at the Fort Bar in Broughty Ferry on May 9 and a Strawberry Fayre at Auchmithie on August 3.

But of course, the big fund-raiser, the Relay for Life, will take place on Saturday, September 21, into Sunday, September 22, at Arbroath United Cricket Club.

Teams can already register to take part in the 24-hour event, which this year has the theme of ‘Heroes and Villains’.

And a formal launch of this year’s relay is set to take place at the Lochlands ground on March 15, which will mark the start of fund-raising for the event.

Then at the end of the year, attentions will once again return to the Arbroath’s New Year’s Day dook, which is set to go ahead once more on January 1, 2014.
