Dirty water could be thing of the past
A BURST water main which led to discoloured water for residents of Letham could soon be a thing of the past thanks to a £15 million modernisation programme by Scottish Water.
Patrick W. Anderson, 2 McFarlane Croft, contacted the Arbroath Herald on Monday morning to complain about having to put up with brown water.
He commented: “I contacted the staff of Scottish Water in Edinburgh and they told me that there had been a large water pipe burst in the Forfar area and that Letham and Kirkbuddo were having this brown coloured water problem.
“We in Letham seem to have regular dirty water due to burst pipes and we also seem to have lots of electric cuts with electric going off and coming back on a short time later or even off for a while. I have never seen a place having these defects so often in a year!
“It seems that Loch Lee supplies water to Letham and to the areas affected this weekend which extended out to Padanaram, Kirkbuddo, Letham, Forfar and even Redford.
“It would appear that a large pipe broke on Friday afternoon and the crews worked to repair it during the weekend as we had Scottish Water staff in our street supplying water to the residents as the water from the taps was disgusting.
“The discoloured water continued until late afternoon on Monday when the water quality seemed to improve and it looked more like water than tea or worse as it had been in the days since the burst happened.”
A Scottish Water spokesperson explained: “Scottish Water engineers repaired a significant burst to a water main serving the Letham area over the weekend.
“Using their knowledge of the network they redistributed supplies ensuring the area without water was reduced to around 20 properties. Bottled water was delivered directly to those customers requesting alternative supplies.
“The burst disturbed the natural sediment which lies in these pipes.
“These pipes have a recent history of bursts and require rehabilitation; therefore as part of a £15 million programme of work across Tayside and Fife, Scottish Water will shortly be improving this section of the water mains network.”
He concluded: “We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
