ANGUS Darts Association and The Cafe Project will launch a new Youth Darts Academy based in Arbroath on Thursday (February 16).

The Academy will aim to identify darts ability in young people and introduce new players to the sport from an early age but away from the stereotypical pub environment.

The Cafe Project, at 7 Brothock Bridge, Arbroath, will be the venue for the Academy training nights and competitions. The new venture has the backing of all dart leagues affiliated in Angus and also the governing body; the British Darts Organisation (BDO).

The Academy will meet every Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. to learn about the sport of darts in a safe environment and is open to boys and girls aged from 10 to 21 years. There will also be various competitions held throughout the year on Sunday afternoons.

Scottish international darts player Alan Soutar will be heading up the Academy with the help of other local volunteer coaches.

Alan commented: “We have to offer help and assistance at all levels to ensure that everyone gets the chance to reach their full potential. Darts has given me so much. I want these youngsters to have the same opportunity.”

The opening Thursday night will be a registration evening to enrol all the players into the Academy and parents are welcome to attend to hear about what the Academy will offer.

There will be four free-standing dartboards in use on the night and players will be able showcase their talent to the coaches during a throw evaluation period and then some fun games will finish off the evening. Some freebies - new darts, flights and stems - will be given away to start the youngsters off on the road to darting success.

There is a structured program of events planned for the first few months of the Academy designed to introduce new players to the sport but also to include players of all ages and abilities.
