Darling students graduate!

A GROUP of 10 young people have graduated from innovative project which supports those with learning disabilities find work thanks to an Arbroath venture.
The project, which is run by ENABLE Scotland is based at Darlings Coffee Shop on the High Street, which operates as a social enterprise.
The project supports young people who have a learning disability to develop employability skills, boost their confidence and increase their potential to secure meaningful employment.
As part of the programme, the graduates had to undertake a 16-week training and work experience programme within a commercial coffee shop setting that includes kitchen and food preparation skills as well as food presentation and customer service and hospitality skills.
They also completed an employability and job search skills course delivered within a six week hub training programme.
The Hub will also provide a drop in training facility for young people who are participating on the hospitality and catering training programme and those on work experience within other work sectors.
In addition the graduates also received transition planning and support to move into employment, training or education and will also be helped with a comprehensive aftercare programme and on-going support to ensure that progression and jobs are sustained.
Lianne Williams, business manager for ENABLE Scotland said: “Young people who have a learning disability often experience isolation and loneliness, which is in part due to high rates of unemployment for people who have a learning disability.
“Darling’s Coffee Shop is delivering life transforming employment and opportunities for young people who have a learning disability in Angus.
“We are already seeing some great outcomes for the young people who have taken part with some moving into meaningful paid employment.
“I offer my congratulations to the young people who graduated, all have worked exceptionally hard and deserve recognition for their efforts.”
At a presentation in Darling’s Coffee Shop on Friday, the graduates were presented with their certificates for completing the course and were also given certificates to show they had completed a Royal Environmental Health Institute Scotland course.
