Council to challenge school decision

ANGUS Council are to challenge the Scottish Government’s decision to scrap proposals for a new £8 million school in Arbroath.

As reported in today’s (Friday) Herald, the full council were to discuss whether to mount legal proceedings in the Court of Session to appeal against the government’s decision.

The plans would have seen both Muirfield and Timmergreens Primaries close and the pupils merged into the new build in the grounds of Hospitalfield House.

However, in a vote yesterday (Thursday) which was held in private, members decided to challenge the decision which saw the plans axed by the education ministers and launch a judicial review proceedings.

For more reaction to the plans for a judicial review, see next Friday’s edition of the Arbroath Herald.

The secret vote yesterday conceals from the public which Councillors have voted to risk losing public money should this 'desperate' legal action fail. At a time when the public are told that 'financial constraints' are behind cuts in services, Angus residents can add paying for legal representation as another reason their services will be affected. Will the Council's Law & Administartion Department represent the Council or did they decide at their 'secret meeting'to employ the services of an expensive QC? If they do win what will the new 'superschool' be called - did they decided on that too..... perhaps 'Peter Nield Primary'???
