Council forced into action on dog mess
A REPORT on dog fouling could be set to come before Angus Council as the Arbroath Herald’s campaign to rid the streets of dog mess intensifies.
Again, readers have been flooding the Herald with their sightings of dog fouling and people who are not picking up after their pets.
And several streets that have been named and shamed for being particularly dirty this week are Millgate, Lochlands Drive and Cairnie Street.
However, Angus Council may be set to discuss the situation after one councillor was particularly disgusted with the mess left in her ward.
Jeanette Gaul, who represents Kirriemuir and is a dog owner herself, said: “My husband and I are appalled at the mess owners are failing to clear up behind them. It is simply laziness and it leaves behind a mess for others to step over and step in and a costly and unappealing job for council staff to clean up.
“I have asked that a report on the problem be brought to the neighbourhood services committee as soon as possible so we can debate the problem and start to look at solutions Perhaps we should be calling on ministers to give us stronger powers to tackle the problem.
“In the meantime I would urge all owners to bag and bin their waste and clean up after them or face the prospect of a fine for dog fouling.”
Meanwhile one mother who contacted the Herald to name and shame Millgate as a dog mess hotspot was particularly concerned for her children.
She said: “My child goes to Ladyloan Primary School and there are frequently piles of mess outside the school gates.
“My war cry on the way to school is always ‘watch where you step’. It is sickening that these dog owners do not care about the health of the children, as the health risks to children are frequently highlighted in the media.”
Another lady says she has spotted dog owners park next to the old Ladyloan School and stay in their vehicles while they allow their dogs to run around on the grass.
She added that if these dogs do make a mess, the owners very rarely leave their cars to pick up after them.
While another man got in touch to say the area beside Lochlands Bowling Club was pretty bad.
He added: “I have seen the council pick up around that area but they shouldn’t have to do it, us the tax payers are having to pay for it.”
