Could cash boost pave way for boom time?

THE WEST Links could be set for further work to put it back on the map as tourist destination thanks to a £220,000 cash windfall.

In a report that was circulated at Angus Council’s neighbourhood services committee meeting yesterday (Thursday), it was revealed the local authority had been successful in bidding for further money from the Coastal Communities fund.

The local community planning team has already set up the West Links Partnership, a group consisting of key stakeholders in both the public and private sector.

And in September, brand new play equipment was opened at the West Links costing £500,000, which has already seen a rise in visitor numbers.

Now new plans for the site include new street furniture, improvements to the sea wall to protect the footpath and play area and development of a new slipway.

It is also proposed that a resort manager should be appointed for a 12 month period to promote the West Links and organise year-round activities.

There are also plans to support the group wanting to bring a skatepark to the West Links and develop an innovative funding package.

The report also reveals how the council intends to tackle vandalism after a series of incidents made some of the play equipment unusable just weeks after opening.

Director of neighbourhood services Ron Ashton said: “In response to this, a short-term working group is being established with representatives from Angus Council and Tayside Police in order to develop a security strategy which will be sufficiently robust to address the future needs of the West Links area upon the completion of the redevelopment.”
