Arbroath's Military wifes choir performed carols at Tesco Arbroath on Saturday.

ARBROATH shoppers had a musical accompaniment to their trip to Tesco at the weekend.

On Saturday the ladies of the Military Wives Choir (MWC) Condor were at the store to spread some festive goodwill and raise money for the Military Wives Choir Foundation.

According to spokesperson and choir member Debbie Rogers a great time was had by all.

She said: “It was amazing. We went to the Community Spirit Church and performed there in the morning as it’s one of choir members’ churches, and that was lovely.

Then we went down to Tesco and I have to say, the people of Arbroath were absolutely amazing. They supported us fully and they put a lot of money in our buckets.”

The choir raised just under £300 for the foundation which will be used to support the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help.

Debbie said: “We raised just shy of £300. I think it was £287.41, not bad for a couple of hours down at Tesco. We were thrilled. We didn’t expect that.

“People were putting money in our buckets as they went in and as they came out they were putting whatever change they had in as well.”

The ladies performed all the Christmas classics, such as ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘White Christmas’, as well as ‘Stronger Together’ from the Military Wives Choir album of the same name.

There were also one or two tricky ones thrown in the mix. Debbie explained: “We sang ‘Silent Night’ which is a hard one to master, as it has a three part harmony, and ‘Carol of the Bells’ which is also a difficult one with a three-part harmony, but we smashed those and we’re really proud of ourselves.”

Christmas will be quiet on the choir front, as the members go their separate ways for the festive season, but the group are hoping to do more in 2013.

Debbie explained: “We are looking to get out and about a lot more in the spring time so we will be starting new songs in January with a view to getting out and about.”

MWC Condor are always looking for new members, and anyone with a connection to the military, be they mother, sister or partner is always welcome.

The choir practice in St Christopher’s Church at RM Condor on a Wednesday evening between 7.30 and 9.30 p.m., and Friday at 9.30 a.m.
