Commemorative beer is in lighthouse bottles

A LOCAL brewery is hoping a specially bottled beer to commemorate the Year of the Light will become a collectors item.
Angus Ales based in Carnoustie have already brewed the Bell Rock Light beer and it is available in Wetherspoons in Market Place, Arbroath.
But after managing to secure some bottles which are shaped like a lighthouse, the brewers decided to produce a small batch of the bottled variety.
The bottles have now been donated to Harry Simpson, chairman of the Year of the Light Steering Group and they will be raffled off during the Year of the Light concert which takes place on September 16 and 17 in the Webster Theatre.
Alan Lawson of Angus Ales said it was important for the firm to mark the bicentenary of the Bell Rock lighthouse and hopes the bottles will become much sought after.
He added: “Bell Rock Light is different to our other beers and we made it after a request by Wetherspoons in Arbroath.
“We now have a small number of bottles of Bell Rock Light which are shaped like the lighthouse and we hope they will become prized items and something people can keep as a souvenir from the Year of the Light.
“I saw the bottles shaped like a lighthouse at my local wine store where they contained beer originally from Estonia.
“I bought some and after drinking them decided to wash the bottles out and use them for the Bell Rock beer.
“It is just a bit of fun really but we are quite pleased with how people have liked them.”
As there are only a limited number of the bottles available, the only way for collectors to get their hands on them is to buy a raffle ticket at the ‘Follow the Light’ concert in the Webster Theatre next weekend.
The event will see various singers and dancers from around the town perform a nautical themed show in tribute to the Bell Rock.
And Year of the Light chairman Harry Simpson believes the bottles will be a great prize to win.
He said: “I think the bottles will become a collectors item and will be much sought after.
“I have tried the beer and it is very nice so it will be a great prize to win.”
