Club’s enlightening talk on Annie Gilruth

Mrs Ann Craig was the speaker for the first meeting of the New Year of the Arbroath Antiquary and History Club.

Ann has lived in Auchmithie for 40 years and has been researching the life of Mrs Annie Gilruth.

Ann used a play to portrait Annie Anderson’s young life when she was left an orphan.

Annie married Andrew Gilruth and had six children.

The hard life of the women and a high illiteracy rate with fishing the main employment led her to look at ways she could help.

A church and manse were built in the village in 1885, then in 1878 a schoolhouse was opened and in 1888 a village hall, with Mrs Gilruth the driving force behind these projects.

Annie upset the people when she wrote to the School Board and said the school was behind the times and needed more staff and regular inspections. Things improved and the literacy rate increased.

It appears Annie began to take an interest in the idea of a harbour. Finally work began in January, 1890, but there were various problems.

George Laidlaw gave a vote of thanks for a most interesting and well researched topic.

The next meeting on February 22 will have Don Clark talking about ‘The History of Timex.’
