Cliffs victim from Montrose

TAYSIDE Police on Tuesday revealed the identity of the man found at the foot of Arbroath Cliffs early on Saturday. He was 27-year-old William Watson, of Montrose.

A police spokesperson commented: “Mr Watson’s family are understandably upset by their sudden loss and have said that he will be greatly missed. They do not wish to make any further comments and have requested that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“As with all sudden deaths a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Volunteer crews from Arbroath’s RNLI lifeboat station were called out after a walker reported seeing what they believed to be a person at the foot of cliffs.

The station was alerted by the Coastguard at 12.51 p.m. on Saturday and both the all-weather lifeboat and the inshore lifeboat were launched within a few minutes.

Upon arriving at the scene, four crew members were put ashore, one from the inshore and three from the all-weather boat.

It was quickly established that this was not a rescue situation and Tayside Police requested that the scene be preserved while they despatched specialist officers.

The RNLI crew members on shore remained there while both lifeboats returned to the station and collected the specialist police before returning to the scene.

Once the police had carried out their work the deceased was recovered by the inshore lifeboat before being passed over to the all-weather lifeboat, and brought back to the station in Arbroath at about 4 p.m.

The casualty was brought ashore and transferred into the care of the police.
