Cash boost for parks

THE ARBROATH and Carnoustie skatepark projects have been promised £30,000 towards their goals by Angus Council.

Councillor David Fairweather said that the Arbroath group is “over the moon” with the money and that they have been working hard to raise their own cash for the appeal.

Two bag packing nights at Morrisons and a Zumbathon fund-raiser at the Arbroath Sports Centre have contributed to the total which, so far, has contributed over £6,000, and they are hopeful of outside funding.

He said, in support of the move: “We want this to happen. It can and will happen without the council having to pay in full.”

The money was set aside by Councillor Mark Salmond, the local authority’s convener of corporate services, in last week’s council budget.

He said: “Following requests from local members on behalf of established skatepark development groups within Arbroath and Carnoustie I wish, in addition to the council land provision for these projects, to pledge a sum of £30,000 to each project from the council’s local capital fund to assist these community groups in achieving their goal of providing this identified key local facility.”

The authority’s decision to grant the groups the money is provisional and will only be given if the groups raise a further £100,000.

The proposed finance has been welcomed by Councillor Helen Oswald.

She said: “It’s great that these young people are willing to do something for themselves. I’m really behind them and I’m prepared to help them in any way. They have a very good plan and a realistic timescale.”

The proposed skateparks will be situated in Carnoustie at the site of the current skatepark and in Arbroath at the West Links. Similar park projects have gone ahead in Forfar and Montrose.

Mark Salmond added: “A similar approach will apply to any other constituted skatepark groups from other Angus areas promoting such developments.”
