Butcher on Pie Club shortlist

AN ARBROATH butcher has been shortlisted in the forthcoming Scotch Pie Club Awards 2013.

D.H. Robertson, Fisheracre, competed against over 100 Scottish butchers and bakers, to have the quality of their pies recognised by a panel of judges which included the Provost of Fife and former Dunfermline Athletic manager, Jim Leishman.

According to organisers the Dunfermline-based panel of the Scotch Pie Club received a record 500 entries, including pies, pastries, sausage rolls, bridies and other savouries.

For the first time the competition was opened up to accommodate football clubs meaning Robertson’s opponents included some of the biggest names in Scottish football.

The judges had just one day to assess all the entries, but were up to the challenge according to head judge Robert Ross.

He said: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw how many products we had to consider but thankfully the judges were up to the job and we managed to sniff, squeeze and taste all the entries to ensure that only the best of the best will be awarded prizes.”

Special guest judge Jim Leishman was given the job of testing the football pies and was joined in this by fans and sports reporters. He said: “The football pie has come a long way and today it is an integral part of fan’s enjoyment of the game. I am delighted that the football pie is finally getting the recognition it deserves.”

The World Pie Championships give Scottish butchers and bakers the opportunity to have the quality of their goods recognised.

The World Champion, winner of the Scotch Pie category will be announced in January.

Competition founder, Alan Stuart said: “Judging day for the 14th World Scotch Pie Championships was our busiest ever and the standard was higher than ever too. We have a huge number of hard working bakers and butchers who deserve recognition for delivering great products day in and day out.

“I am confident that the judges have made the right decisions today and I look forward to announcing the winners early next year.”
