Designing the Bell Rock lighthouse was one of the most demanding engineering feats of the 18th century.

But it didn’t hold back teams of Arbroath primary school children and Angus College students from taking up the challenge of designing a new accommodation module.

The ‘Bell Rock Challenge’ is a primary seven transition event which sees the surrounding primary schools come to Arbroath High School for two days to help them settle in before next autumn.

The NC construction students from the college were invited along to help judge the competition and support the pupils with their design plans.

Yvonne Anderson from Arbroath High School said: “The challenge was made easier this year with the help of the students, who helped guide the teams to produce models of an amazingly high standard.

“We were also thrilled to get a letter of support from HRH Princess Anne as Patron of Lighthouses, passing on her best wishes to all who took part.”

And Angus College course leader Jim Garvie added: “Our students and the pupils had great fun and really enjoyed working together as they progressed through the various stages of the competition.

“It was super to witness the pupils and the students working towards a common goal.”
