Arbroath’s young scientists in gear

AN INNOVATIVE mobile science project aimed at engaging pupils with the subject pulled up at Arbroath High School this week.

The Lab in a Lorry stopped off at the school on Tuesday and Wednesday and was visited by groups from neighbouring schools.

The project is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by offering 11-14 year olds the opportunity to explore science through specially created interactive experiments.

The three 44-feet lorries are each fitted with three distinct lab areas where groups of up to six pupils can take part in fun and informative experiments.

The programme is delivered by volunteers who are all practicing scientists and engineers, and the ratio of at least one mentor to six students ensures everyone gets a chance at experimental science.

Lab in a Lorry in Scotland is a partnership between the Institute of Physics, OPITO, the Scottish Government, the Dulverton Trust, the Rank Prize Funds and the Society of Petroleum Engineers, The Schlumberger Foundation is a founding partner and volunteer assistance provided by STEMNET.

Institute of Physics spokesperson Charlotte Govan said: “Lab in a Lorry is a fantastic experience for young people. It generates excitement and curiosity in science by letting them explore experimental science for themselves with the help of expert mentors.”
