LOCAL politicians are urging people to do their bit for the environment and recycle their Christmas cards.

On Monday, both MP Mike Weir and MSP Graeme Dey visited Morrison’s in Arbroath where people can deposit their cards for recycling.

The Christmas card recycling scheme is being run by the supermarket on behalf of the Salvation Army.

And both Mr Weir and Mr Dey took the opportunity to recycle their own Christmas cards at the store.

Mr Weir said: “It is vitally important that as much as possible is recycled, both to protect the environment and meet exacting targets to avoid landfill charges.

“Christmas cards are a good source of high quality card and I would urge everyone to recycle their cards.”

Meanwhile Mr Dey, who serves on the Scottish Parliament’s environment committee was also delighted with the scheme.

He added: “It’s terrific that Morrison’s, along with other retailers, are affording Scots what is a very easy to seize opportunity to recycle their Christmas cards.

“I know that local folk took the chance to recycle cards at Morrison’s Arbroath store in huge numbers last year.

“I hope it’s a similar story this time.”
