Angus’ hidden art treasures revealed online

ANGUS College is participating in a nationwide online art project through the BBC to reveal previously unseen paintings.

The college has provided 21 works of art to the ‘Your Paintings’ online collection which aims to make the UK’s entire collection of oil paintings available to view online.

Among the paintings contributed by Angus College are National Art Competition winners such as ‘Broken Shell’ by Frances Law and ‘Thick Air’ by Eleanor Jones-Chesney.

A grand total of 211,861 paintings are now online thanks to the BBC in partnership with the Public Catalogue Foundation, and of these 80 per cent are not normally on display but are kept in storage.

The artwork has been provided by over 3,000 galleries, museums and other civic buildings around the country and spans around 600 years of art history, making it arguably the greatest art collection in the world.

Jill Taylor is an art lecturer at Angus College. She said: “It’s a fantastic idea to have these collections on record like this and it is a fabulous resource for students to track artists and their works around the country. We hope to be adding to our collection all the time.”

Other Angus institutions have also contributed artwork, including Arbroath Abbey and Hospitalfield House which alone presented 237 pieces.

In addition visitors to the online collection can help with categorising the works by ‘tagging’ them and making it easier for future users to find specific paintings, themes or artists.
