ALMOST £6,000 RAISED BY CYCLE RUN

A GROUP of cyclists who pedalled from Arbroath to Edinburgh and back on the same day have raised nearly £6,000 for two charities that help injured soldiers, writes Jennifer Newton.

The challenge was set by Ian Wren, who has served with the Royal Artillery and 212 Highland Battery, to complete the 160-mile round trip in one day.

He already carried out a 100-mile charity bike ride around Angus last year which raised 3,000 but wanted to better that this time.

Ian along with Gary Bruce, Andy Duff, Bob Stewart, Brian Cargill and Steve Smith from Angus Bike Chain set off from the town at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning to head for the capital.

While they were there they met with the Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who supported their efforts at the Scottish Parliament building.

They finally made it back to Arbroath at 7.30 p.m. after having a smooth run home.

Ian said the final part of the challenge was the hardest but added they were all kept going with the help of their support team.

He explained: "It was tough coming back as we had left Arbroath at four in the morning but we made it back for 7.30 p.m.

"We have to say thank you to our support staff who was my wife Beverly, Steve's wife Mary and Gary's wife Wilma as they drove in a van alongside us handing out the drinks."

The money that has been raised will now be split between Help for Heroes and Horseback UK, which helps traumatised soldiers relieve their stress by encouraging them to care for horses.
