Abbey wedding campaign praised
THE ARBROATH Herald has been recognised for the vital role the newspaper played in reinstating weddings at Arbroath Abbey.
The Herald scooped the Campaign of the Year award at the Johnston Press Scotland Division 2012 awards.
Last year the newspaper broke the story that Historic Scotland was no longer allowing couples to tie the knot at the town’s most historic setting.
And after a massive response, the Arbroath Herald worked closely with the Arbroath Abbey Action Group to persuade Historic Scotland to change their minds.
Herald editor Brian Stormont was pleased to see the paper recognised but paid tribute to the hard work of the Action Group.
He said: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our efforts in campaigning for weddings to be reintroduced at Arbroath Abbey.
“Mention however must be made of the Arbroath Abbey Action Group which worked very hard and is continuing that work by promoting the venue.
“The real winners are those who want to get married in the magnificent venue of Arbroath Abbey.”
The award is the Arbroath Herald’s second honour. See page six.
