A step closer to Ghana

AN ARBROATH teenager has taken a huge leap towards her fund-raising target to teach under-privileged children in West Africa.
Since October Arbroath High School pupil Karina Rattray (17) has been raising money to fund a trip to Ghana in the summer to teach children for a year in the impoverished nation.
Karina’s funds nearly doubled last month after a successful evening of mediumship and a surprise donation.
In early February an evening of mediumship with James Cameron and guests in Seaton House raised £400 for her cause.
In an unexpected development, the charitable Wood Family Trust, donated £800 to the fund bringing the total up £4,000 and leaving her just £1,500 shy of her target.
To cover her training, travel, insurance and accommodation Karina was given a target of £5,500 by social enterprise charity Project Trust.
The trip is run by non-profit education charity Project Trust which for the last 40 years has sent school leavers between the ages of 17 and 19 to Asia, Africa and South America.
The aim of the scheme is to completely immerse a young person in the culture of a country by living and working there for 12 months.
It can improve their communications, teaching, maturity, independence, confidence and foreign language skills.
Karina said: “Ever since I first heard about Project Trust over a year ago I have wanted nothing more than to go overseas with the organisation and was over the moon upon finding out that I had been one of the lucky volunteers to be selected.”
The imaginative teenager has also designed T-shirts with the logo Get Karina to Ghana 2013-14 logo on them to help with her fund-raising efforts and they will be available in the near future.
