FAST FOOD giants Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) have confirmed they are hoping a new restaurant in Arbroath will be open early next year, writes Jennifer Newton.

Last month it was reported that such an outlet could create 30 new jobs for the local community and now the global chain has announced a drive-thru restaurant is set for the Westway Retail Park.

Planning permission for the store was granted last year and it is understood contracts were signed last week by KFC to build on the land at the retail park owned by Carswell Properties.

Nina Arnott, a spokesperson for KFC, confirmed: "We're really pleased to confirm that we are planning to open a drive-thru on the Westway Retail Park.

"The new restaurant will create around 30 jobs in the area, and we are hoping that it will be ready to open by early 2011.

"We are really looking forward to being part of the community and welcoming local residents into the restaurant."

The jobs set to be created by the KFC restaurant would be in addition to other employment opportunities that could arise in the area when a further development at the Westway is completed.

Carswell Properties currently has planning permission for a non-food retail unit at the entrance to the site while McDonald Estates have had plans approved for three units, including one that would be a food store.

Rumours have circulated that the food unit could open up as an Asda store after the supermarket chain announced plans to accelerate the opening of smaller outlets.

However, a spokeswoman from Asda said last month there are no plans to open a store on the Westway Retail Park but added the company is always on the lookout for new locations and opportunities.

It is hoped a total of 140 jobs could be created when the extension to the retail park is completed.
