Karen Taylor, flower shop supervisor at Morrisons Arbroath store, was pick of the bunch at the supermarket’s Mastercraft competition.

Mastercraft is Morrisons in-house competition which recognises and rewards its store colleagues who are experts in eight specialist trades: butchers, bakers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, wine advisors, florists, cake shop and produce specialists.

Karen, who has been a florist for 32 years, faced tough competition from fellow florists across Morrisons 496 stores to secure a place as one of six finalists competing in her category.

In a series of tasks staged at Morrisons headquarters in Yorkshire, she had to use her creativity to design and devise an autumn themed bouquet. Karen proved she was best of the blooms and was awarded top marks from the judges before being presented with her trophy.

Karen commented: “I am so proud to have won the competition. Not many people realise that people like me working in the flower shop are often qualified florists so it’s great to achieve some recognition for this.

“I think it was the fact that I based my bouquet on pinks, reds and greens rather than traditional autumn colours which made it stand out for the judges.”

She concluded: “It has been a really exciting experience and the support from my colleagues in store has been great. The judges seemed to love what I created and I hope the people of Arbroath do too.”

Morrisons head of craft skills, Mickey Greenhalgh, said: “We are proud of the traditional skills on show in our stores and we like to reward those specialists who really stand out.”

Karen will now be entered into the ‘People’s Champion’ category where the public can vote for their favourite Morrisons specialist. Readers can vote for Karen at: www.morrisons.co.uk/mastercraft
