An ex-pat Lichtie recently returned to Scotland to become the first person to be married in the new Bell Rock tartan.

Kevin Bates married Cathie Haselden in Edinburgh Castle on December 30 resplendent in the Bell Rock tartan named for the iconic Arbroath structure and created by local graphic designer Steven Patrick Sim.

Kevin, who grew up in Arbroath, attended St Vigeans Primary School, Arbroath High School and the University of Dundee, has been living and working in Australia and Singapore for seven years, latterly as the head of risk for Lend Lease Australia.

According to his father Sandy, Kevin was immediately attracted to the design, which commemorates the building of the technological marvel that is the Bell Rock lighthouse and which was recently adopted as the corporate tartan of the Northern Lighthouse Board.

He said: “As soon as he saw the tartan he liked it. It’s a little bit different.

There is an unusual twist in the tale, as it just so happens that Kevin and designer Steven are long lost pals, having both been keen members of the old Spartan gym some 20 years ago.

Steven kitted out Kevin and the bridal party in the full Bell Rock tartan, kilt, knurled plaid, trews and so on.

Steven said: “I was delighted to know it was going to be the first wedding in the Bell Rock tartan. Really thrilled, and to find out it was at Edinburgh Castle in such a fine setting.”
