High standard continues at Forfar’s original Indian

The Rupali restaurant in Forfar

As Forfar’s first Indian restaurant and take away, the original Rupali just off Castle Street has a long and distinguished history in the town.

And, on a recent visit for dinner, it was good to see its high standards being maintained.

Tucked away in a quiet corner in the centre of town, the restaurant is now back in the family of its original owner and producing food of outstanding quality.

My colleague Sarah and I dropped in to sample the menu and weren’t disappointed. After being shown to our table, we eagerly awaited our first course which was chicken and vegetable pakora, with side salad, which came with chilli dipping sauce.

Covered in just the right amount of batter, the chicken was tender and tasty and contrasted nicely with the vegetable pakora which was crispy. But the delicious whole was lifted to another level by the piquancy of the chilli sauce which had a nice and spicy bite without being overpowering. As chilli sauces go, it was a bit of a slow burner with a satisfying heat that built up and was extremely moreish.

Our main course was the restaurant’s signature dish, chicken tikka jalfrezi which consisted of chunks of succulent chicken cooked with a delicious concoction of onion, green pepper, green chilli, yogurt, tomato and mixed herbs and spices.

Accompanied with basmati rice, the jalfrezi was served in balti bowls so we could dish it up ourselves, a novelty I enjoy in restaurants and have never got over.

And it was aptly named as a speciality of the house. With Indian food I tend towards the mild, and although the sauce had a kick of heat from the chillis, it was balanced nicely by the yogurt to produce a mild yet spicy effect.

The delicately-flavoured rice was the perfect accompaniment and clean plates and dishes were again the seal of approval.

To finish, we had Golab Jamon, a traditional Indian dessert which is ideal for anyone with a sweet tooth. A small dumpling which has been soaked in sugar syrup, it’s more dense in consistency than sponge but still light enough to round off a meal.

Engaged by the friendly staff and our delicious meal, we both felt that we’d have no hesitation in making a return visit.
