ANGUS MP Mike Weir took part in a speed dating event organised by carers’ organisations for Carers’ Week in the House of Commons.
The idea behind the event was that MPs would be able to meet small groups of carers to hear directly from them about their experiences and needs.
Mr Weir said the event provided an insight into the wide number of problems that affect carers
He continued: “During the event I heard many moving accounts of how caring effects individuals dealing with family members with a wide range of conditions, including Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis and cancer. I also met representatives from the charities supporting carers.
“The work that carers do can have a considerable effect on their own mental and physical health. The Carers’ Week report ‘In Sickness and in Health’ revealed that over 80 per cent of carers had such difficulties.”
Mr Weir concluded: “It is vital that we all recognise the sacrifices made by carers and provide the support that they need to continue to care for their loved ones.”
