Arbroathians urged to join organ donor register

LOCAL people are invited along to the Asda store in Arbroath on Sunday (March 17) to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

A national tour will be visiting the area to encourage more people to have a chat about organ donation. They will highlight the importance of speaking about organ donation with family and loved ones, so they know your wishes should the worst happen.

The 40-date tour is part of the national campaign, which highlights how the seven words ‘I’d like to be an organ donor’ can save up to seven lives.

NHS Tayside lead clinician for organ donation Dr Stephen Cole, who is also Tayside Donation Committee chair, said: “While people in Tayside have shown their commitment to organ donation - demonstrated in there being more organ donors in the area than anywhere else in Scotland at 32.3 donors per million of population - more still needs to be done.

“There are around 600 patients in Scotland currently waiting on a transplant, and across the UK three people die every day because they don’t get the organ they need in time - resulting in over 1,000 deaths every year.

“I would urge everyone to think about organ donation today and ensure that their loved ones know what their wishes would be should the worst happen. Most of us would accept a donated organ if we needed one, so it’s worth taking the time to have a chat and make your views known by joining the NHS Organ Donor Register.”

John Forsythe, Scotland’s lead clinician for organ donation and transplantation, added: “In our society, nobody likes talking about death. It’s a taboo subject. However those who have elected to join the NHS Organ Donor Register or who have made their families aware of their organ donation wishes, make a most generous decision which allows others to live.

“Due to the generosity of the Scottish people, organ donor numbers are increasing and allowing more life-saving transplants to take place. But there is much still to do as people wait on lists for their chance to get a transplant.

“Please think about what you would want to happen to you, add your name to the register and, as the ad says, have a wee chat to your family too.”
