A TEAM of Arbroath hairdressers has made it to the grand final of one of the most prestigious national hairdressing competitions.

Cloud 9 based on the West Port in the town won the north of England and Scotland section of the NYC Redken Hair Awards 2011 in the Colour Genius category.

Salon owner Bekki Smith-Dutton travelled to London last month with their model Steph Strachan where she created an autumn winter look, which included bright copper and red tones which was styled with a heavy fringe and dramatic curls.

And after winning praise from a panel of top hairdressing experts including celebrity stylist Lee Stafford, Bekki along with staff members Nikki Webster and Danielle McWalter were invited to Manchester last Tuesday, where they found out they had won.

Their victory means they have gone one better after reaching the same stage last year and coming in second.

Now the whole Cloud 9 team are preparing for the national stage of the competition, which will be held at the Brixton Academy in London in September.

And if they are lucky enough to win, not only will a trip to New York be among the prizes, they will also get to be involved in their own fashion shoot abroad and have a double page spread in a top hair magazine.

Bekki, who was delighted the salon had made it so far, explained: “We first had to send in a photograph of our model and out of 500 entries we were chosen to go to London to recreate the look.

“We had to impress a lot of top industry experts including Lee Stafford and editors of hair magazines so it really is one of the biggest hair shows of the year.

“We did our research into autumn/winter trends so that is why we decided to go for the copper and red.

“And we went down to Manchester last Tuesday where we found out we had won so we are delighted.”

At the next stage of the competition in London, the whole salon will be travelling down along with their model Steph who will show off the team’s creation by strutting down the catwalk.

Not only will they be colouring and styling her hair, they also have to complete the look with make-up and clothes.

Bekki added: “There is going to be around 1,000 people in the Brixton Academy so it will be exciting to see Steph go down the catwalk.

“It is a massive event so it is great that we are able to get recognition as we are a salon in small town compared to ones in London.

“But now we are getting the same recognition as them which we are so pleased about.”
