Grant for street pastors

A STREET pastor charity that patrols the streets of Arbroath offering aid to revellers has been given a much needed funding boost.

The street pastors group will be able to use a grant of £4,182 from the Lloyds TSB Foundation to pay for expert guidance in expanding their network.

Lloyds TSB’s Capacity Building programme provides funding for voluntary groups to pay for improvements and professional performance reviews.

The street pastors are currently active in 12 other communities and with this funding they will be given help in doubling their network.

Established in 2010 by The Ascension Trust (Scotland) the charity trains volunteers who patrol town centres at the weekend, touring nightspots, talking to people and providing a calming presence.

Susan Smith, project support worker with The Ascension Trust (Scotland), said: “We are growing quickly, and the Capacity Building grant from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland will help us expand further, and train and audit more volunteers. People in Arbroath can be reassured that they can trust the area’s street pastors and that they have been fully trained.”
