A DEDICATED volunteer from Arbroath has been named the ‘Key Volunteer of the Year’ in veterinary charity PDSA’s national volunteer of the year awards.

Animal-lover Gordon Watt impressed the judges with his enthusiasm and commitment to PDSA, donating over 30 hours, six days every week at the busy Arbroath PDSA store on High Street which raises vital funds for sick and injured pets.

Former gardener Gordon, who has lived in Arbroath all his life, beat off competition from more than 5,000 PDSA volunteers to win the coveted title.

The 56-year-old was presented with his trophy by PDSA’s director of retail, Andrew Holl, at a special ceremony at the Arbroath store on Thursday.

He commented afterwards: “I am absolutely delighted and extremely surprised to have won. I really enjoy volunteering at the Arbroath PDSA shop and always look forward to coming in.

“The best part about volunteering is meeting all our fantastic customers and helping them to find what they need. I really enjoy being part of a team who are all passionate about helping a very worthy charity.

“I love animals and over the years I’ve lived with many. At the moment I have two lovely cats of my own called Biscuit and Smudge. I’m so glad to be helping to raise money for such a great cause as PDSA.”

Mr Holl, said: “Gordon has shown the judges that he is passionate about pets and absolutely dedicated to PDSA.

“He is a ‘Key’ volunteer, which means he has had specialist training to take on more responsibility in the store. His commitment, eagerness to learn and cheery personality makes him an extremely popular member of the team.

“He is warm and friendly and makes everyone feel very welcome. He is great on the till and fantastic with our customers.”

He went on: “Gordon has shown his commitment by always arriving an hour before the store opens to make sure everything is set up and the shop looks immaculate. He comes up with great ideas to make the store better and raise more funds to help poorly pets in the local area - he is a true inspiration.

Mr Holl concluded: “We are very lucky to have faithful volunteers like Gordon who give up their time to champion our cause. He absolutely deserves to be PDSA’s ‘Key Volunteer of the Year’.”
