AN ARBROATH club was put through its paces this weekend by a world champion boxer.

Former middleweight world champion Nigel Benn held a training seminar at the premises of British Military Martial Arts (BMMA) on Lindsay Street on Saturday morning.

The boxer was in town in his role as ambassador for BMMA in an effort to highlight the work the group does in providing career paths for former military personnel.

Jason Aston, from the Arbroath branch of BMMA was delighted with the seminar. He said: “It went really, really well. The seminar was buzzing and the place was packed.

“We had 24 people training and I would say there were another 30 people watching, so definitely 50 plus.

“It was a great atmosphere. For somebody of 48 his conditioning was phenomenal and everybody got a chance to work with him.”

According to Jason the visit by Nigel Benn has helped the club. He explained: “He certainly did that. I’ve already had three guys from the seminar join the classes.

“It’s been really good for the club itself and a lot of interest has been shown in the background of the association.”
