Artist Rachel Bower has just launched a new website which offers a fantastic programme of fused glass workshops in Alyth and Coupar Angus.
Rachel has been teaching art in the area for over 10 years both through private classes and workshops for Dundee and Perth local authorities, the Woodland Trust and Scottish Natural Heritage in which she inspires and encourages people of all ages and abilities to discover talents they didn’t know they had.
She said: “Fused glass is stunning to look at, really easy to learn and the results are amazing. It involves cutting glass into shapes, layering the pieces and then heating them in a kiln until they stick or fuse together. You can make almost anything, from jewellery to bowls, coasters to Christmas tree decorations and in every colour you can think of.
“It’s really exciting to see what people come up with, even though they might say ‘I’m not artistic’ people always seem to surprise themselves with what they get out of the kiln. I get a lot of people coming back for more. I’ve taught fused glass to Primary 6 children, to people in their 80s and everyone in between - it really is something for everyone.”
Classes kick off on Sunday, October 26 when Rachel will be teaching an introduction to fused glass from 10-3 p.m. in Alyth.
The basics of glass fusing will be explained with lots of examples to show what happens to glass as it gets heated followed by a practical demonstration on how to cut glass safely and accurately.
Over the day everyone will have a chance to make a small dish, a sun catcher for the window and coaster choosing from a variety of brightly coloured glass.
At the end of the day work will be fired at Rachel’s studio and returned.
Throughout November and December there will also be classes in jewellery making, Christmas decorations, glass bowls and coasters.
Classes are run from the Alyth Community Wing, St Andrews Street, Alyth and the Talbot Hall, Trades Lane in Coupar Angus, booking is essential. Please contact Rachel for more information.
