Angus Council has launched a fund to help local organisations celebrate the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Her Majesty The Queen’s Baton Relay.

Groups can apply for any amount of up to £2,000 towards an event or activity and applications must be submitted by July 22, with all projects taking place no later than December 31 this year.

Councillor Jeanette Gaul, convener of the Angus Games Steering Group, urged local groups to start thinking about how they can celebrate the games.

“Angus is proud to be a host venue for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and I am delighted that the council has agreed to support local groups and organisations to join the celebrations,” she said.

“We will consider applications for grants for events which capture the spirit of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games and Queen’s Baton Relay. By working with our communities, we can make it a year to remember in Angus.”

Organisations and groups that can apply for a grant include: not-for-profit, constituted groups, charities, a partnership of various groups, individuals planning a project that benefits the wider community, and local schools.

The council will also support private businesses located in the main public thoroughfares of Carnoustie and Monifieth undertaking Commonwealth Games window dressing before and during the event.

The fund will support any costs associated with staging a safe, legal event or putting an activity or running a project associated with the cultural, sporting, artistic or culinary heritage of the Commonwealth.

These include: local sports events or competitions, street parties or local festivals, cultural celebrations or artistic performances, community projects which decorate or enhance local communities during 2014.
