Local beaches have it all

Five local beaches are among the winners in the 2014 Scottish Seaside Awards from environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Arbroath, Carnoustie, Monifieth, Broughty Ferry and Montrose were recognised by the independent charity for the good quality of their water and excellent litter, safety and environmental management procedures.

A total of 61 beaches across Scotland were singled out for praise, but for the Angus seafronts it was not the first time with Carnoustie being recognised since 2006, Arbroath since 2010, Monifieth since 2011 and both Broughty Ferry and Montrose have been flying the Seaside Award flag consecutively since 2004.

Vice-convener of Angus Council’s communities committee Councillor Jeanette Gaul said: “I’m delighted to see this national recognition for these beaches in Angus.

“We recognise that the county’s wonderful coastline is an economic and environmental asset and has invested heavily in our seaside resorts. Angus Council is continuously working to improve the standard of facilities and services at its beaches to ensure that we can compete with confidence with other coastal areas and we will continue to work towards gaining these awards for all seafront areas in the county.”

Mrs Gaul continued: “We have also recently launched our community based Clean-up Angus campaign. The goal of this campaign is quite literally to consign litter, mess and dog fouling to the bin.

“Through this campaign of action against litter and mess we can all take greater pride in Angus.

“Our campaign has included quite a number of clean-up events at beaches and I’ve been heartened to see such a positive response from the community to cleaning up our county.”

Dundee City Council’s environment convener Councillor Craig Melville said: “We are delighted to receive this Resort Seaside Award status for Broughty Ferry beach.

“The city council’s ongoing maintenance of the beach area provides a leisure destination that meets very strict standards.

“It is a top class facility and I am sure it will be enjoyed by many people this year.”
