Two local apprentices have scooped prizes at the annual Angus Training Group’s end of year awards.

Liam McKenzie, who is from Arbroath but works for Halliburton in Montrose was named best apprentice with Douglas Pearson, from Friockheim, who is employed by GE Oil and Gas Montrose was best machinist.

The ceremony was held last Wednesday and the awards were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Arbroath and the Arbroath Guildry.

The awards are presented before the apprentices return to their employers.

And Alan Swankie from Angus Training Group says it has been another successful year.

He explained: “This has been another very busy year for Angus Training Group with 67 apprentices in the centre.

“This is the busiest for 30 years and will be even busier next year with already 71 confirmed apprentices and around six still to be selected by employers.

“These figures mark a remarkable upturn in engineering modern apprenticeships over the last four years.

“With no sign of this receding this is very encouraging for school leavers looking for a well established career path in engineering.”

In addition to the selected awards, all the apprentices successfully completed their off-the-job training and were presented with an SVQ level 2 certificate in performing engineering operations.
