A FRIOCKHEIM woman was delighted recently when she was presented with a national oil industry award.

Kate McGregor (23) was named ‘Technician of the Year’ by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and was presented with her award at a ceremony in London.

Kate recently completed an HND in Petroleum Engineering at Adam Smith College and is currently working as a graduate subsea project engineer in Aberdeen for Subsea Engineering and Technical Services Ltd.

She was nominated for the award by her employers and former college. Kate said: “I was really pleased to win the Technician of the Year Award which is a great honour. I am very grateful to Adam Smith College, my former lecturers and to my current employer for all their support and for putting me forward.

“I’m really enjoying my current job which involves instructing divers, creating dive plans and planning general subsea engineering work for the oil platforms and subsea oil industry. Long term I hope to continue in this field and take all the opportunities that are open to me.”

John Whitelock, departmental manager for Science and Technology at Adam Smith College, said: “We were delighted to support Kate in her application for this award.

“It is great that she is being recognised in this way and we are very pleased that she has done so well. Kate has the skills and personality to succeed in the oil and gas industry and is a very deserving recipient of this award.”

Kate’s hard work was also recognised last year when Shell awarded her a scholarship through the Adam Smith Foundation.

David Burgess, plant installation manager for Shell, based at Mosmorran, said: “It was a pleasure to award Kate a Shell Scholarship last year and I am delighted that this has helped to guide her in the right direction.

“To hear that Kate has also recently been awarded Technician of the Year is fantastic news. I know Kate is a very hardworking individual and I am sure that a promising future lies ahead for her.”

Kate added: “Being awarded the Shell Scholarship last year also contributed to my recent success and gave me the boost and confidence I needed to continue with my studies.”
