ANGUS Council education department has been praised by Education Scotland for having a strong culture of self-evaluation across the service, led well by the director.
The statement was made in the summary of a report prepared by Anna Boni, lead officer for a recent Voluntary Self Evaluation (VSE) exercise.
In her communication to Councillor Peter Nield, education convener, Ms Boni states: “We have now completed both phases of the SVE process in Angus. We would like to thank you, and your staff for the high level of openness and integrity with which you approached the process.
“Angus colleagues worked very well with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate and Angus Alliance colleagues and developed further their existing partnerships through planning, working and evaluating together.
“The process engaged a wide range of colleagues from across the council including elected members, headteachers, community learning and development (CLD) colleagues, and wider partners.
“We found that there was strong staff commitment to the Angus vision and that group members were actively engaged in taking forward improvement based upon self-evaluation and building capacity to ensure continuous improvement.”
She concluded: “We found a strong culture of self-evaluation across the service, led well by the director. The standards and quality report and self-evaluation documents were clear and accurate and in line with the Education Scotland view established through the VSE process. Senior staff welcomed and took full advantage of the independent benchmarking provided by HMI colleagues.
“Education Scotland validated your self-evaluation after the first phase of the VSE process. However, we were delighted that a number of staff chose to engage with us further in partnership in a number of areas beyond the requirements of the VSE.”
And Councillor Peter Nield is delighted by the approbation directed at the Angus schools and staff.
He commented: “Education Scotland has acknowledged the excellent work all education staff are playing in advancing children’s education with Angus Alliance.
“As the convener of education I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone in education, teachers, support staff, CLD and volunteers for moving Angus to becoming one of the leading education authorities in Scotland.”
