FUND-RAISERS are set to plunge into the freezing water at Elliot beach again on New Year’s Day to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Last year, the Angus fund-raising committee of the charity organised the inaugural New Year’s Day Dook, which saw 37 dookers go for a quick dip in the sea, raising £3,500 in the process.
And due to the huge success of last year’s event, it is hoped even more people will take part second time around.
In addition to boost funds, the committee has also secured a copy of the film ‘Iron Man 2’ on DVD, which has been signed by Hollywood star Scarlett Johannson.
The actress was in Auchmithie for five days earlier this month while she filmed scenes for her latest movie, ‘Under the Skin’, which is set in the Highlands.
Scarlett starred in ‘Iron Man 2’, and it is hoped an auction of the signed DVD will go towards making the second dook another huge success.
Alana Loudon, from the Angus committee of Cancer Research UK, was delighted to have received the signed DVD and she now hopes local people will also do their bit to make the event even bigger.
She said: “To take part all you have to do is fill in an application form then you can start collecting sponsorship before the dook on New Year’s Day.
“The water is cold but it is not as bad as you think and we would love to get more than the 37 people who took part last year.
“It was also great to see so many people come out and support us along the beach.
“There must have been a couple of hundred last year so hopefully some of them might be persuaded to take part this time.”
Anybody wanting to take part in the New Year’s Day Dook can contact Alana for an application form on 07881940418.
