THE COUNTY of Angus will hold an afternoon gala event at Glamis Castle, by kind permission of the Earl of Strathmore, on May 20 next year to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

This will be a free community venture supported by the seven burghs. A previous celebration was held in 2002 to mark the occasion of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and this event hopes to exceed the 15,000 spectators who visited that event.

It will be presided over by Mrs Georgiana Osborne, Lord Lieutenant of Angus, with the support of the Provost of Angus and Angus Council. Each burgh will showcase local talent and enterprise in individual marquees set around the Glamis parklands.

Mrs Robina Addison, chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Organising Committee, is planning an exciting programme of performances on the central stage.

Mrs Osborne said: “Angus, Scotland’s birthplace, has a long and proud history, as well as close family associations with the Queen. Her Diamond Jubilee presents an excellent opportunity for the communities within our county to share a day celebrating, informing and entertaining.

“The 2002 celebrations were a great success and I’m certain our Diamond Jubilee celebrations will also be a very special day,

“I am personally very excited about the spectacle of massed pipe bands playing from the castle ramparts while over 500 highland dancers perform in front of the castle. I think it will be a memorable start to an unforgettable day.”
