A facsimile of the world famous Declaration of Scottish Independence signed at Arbroath Abbey in 1320 now hangs in the Palace of Westminster.

Angus MP Mike Weir, who was appointed SNP Chief Whip after the election, has had a copy of the document framed and put up in his Whips office, just feet away from the Chamber of the House of Commons. It joins an old print of Arbroath Abbey.

Commenting Mr Weir said: “The words of the Declaration of Independence echo down to us through the centuries and have been an influence on political thought both here and across the Atlantic.

“Both as a nationalist and a Red Lichtie I felt this historical and important document was a fitting addition to the SNP Whips Office, joining a print I had previously been given of Arbroath Abbey in the 18th century.”
